Derby Wear

If I was in Louisville this weekend, this is what I’d be wearing.

This striped seersucker blazer, linen shirt and cotton-stretch pants by Ermenegildo Zegna is a great look for the Derby or even Memorial Day Weekend.

You can find it all at Neiman Marcus.  While pricey, you can definitely put a similar look together for a more reasonable price with 10 minutes of research .

Read of the Week: Jackets (Not) Required

I read an interesting piece in the Weekend Edition of the Wall St. Journal yesterday. Many formal establishments such as ’21’ Club in Manhattan are loosening their necktie requirements. Others no longer require jackets. The article cites the economy as a big reason, and the changes have led to higher profits. Of course, this all stems from a much more casual society overall.

Although not all men are wearing t-shirts and jeans. Many in the 25-40 age group are dressing to impress and bringing back some of the classic looks.

My own style depends on how I’m feeling or where l’m going. What will make me feel confident and/or comfortable?  Sometimes it’s a suit and other times it’s sneakers and jeans.

I appreciate places that require a necktie and have no problem meeting the requirement when in the mood.  Check out the article and let me know what you think.

The Cardigans

No, this isn’t a post about the 90’s pop band.  I actually found a couple cardigan sweaters I like and wanted to share.  The first is lightweight linen cardigan from Banana Republic.

This cardigan provides a nice alternative to a spring jacket on those brisk mornings, but warm afternoons after you leave the office.  However, since winter won’t end that point might be moot.  Regardless, it will go well with jeans, gray slacks and khakis.

Banana is charging $89.50, and you can get free shipping based on some recent deals they have.  The only color offered is black, but it is available in tall sizes.

Additional Info:

  • Traditional 5-button closure
  • 100% linen
  • Hand wash cold

The second is a Hartford Cotton Blend Cardigan I came across browsing Mr Porter. (

A little more casual, this cardigan will go great with jeans on the weekend.  You can match it with a button down, t-shirt or blazer.  This cardigan will set you back a little more at $200 and is only available in gray.

The Alden Indy Boot

Indiana Jones never gets old.  He made the boots below famous, which have been handcrafted for J. Crew with some exclusive details (stained welt).

The size ranges from 8.5 to 12M, with a $450 price tag.  The dark brown color goes well with dark jeans and khakis, and appear pretty versatile.  Perfect for cliff jumping and running from massive boulders, of course.  For more information visit J. Crew’s site here:

Naturally J. Crew doesn’t have my size, but hopefully they have yours.
